USWNT's Latest Roster Showcases Fresh Talent While European Stars Rest
A new era dawns as U.S. Women’s National Team coach Emma Hayes embraces change, revealing a roster brimming with fresh faces and talent as Europe-based mainstays take a much-needed hiatus. As they prepare to face Ireland and Canada, the team ushers in a wave of newcomers eager to make their mark.
In a strategic move, Hayes reprieves stalwarts like Lindsey Heaps, Catarina Macario, and Emily Fox, offering them respite following a grueling European season. Naomi Girma, the exception on this list, is keen to rejoin the ranks as she recuperates from a calf injury.
Scheduled skirmishes have the U.S. team clashing against Ireland in Commerce City, Colorado on June 26, then battling it out in Cincinnati on June 29, before culminating against Canada in Washington, D.C. on July 2.
The roster is invigorated by the inclusion of four fresh call-ups: defenders Jordyn Bugg, Lilly Reale, and Izzy Rodriguez, alongside midfielder Sam Meza, marking their introduction to the national stage. Among them, six players await their maiden appearance in senior national competition.
Tasked with guiding the USWNT into the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, Hayes has adopted a visionary approach, introducing 27 debutants under her watchful eye. “We aim to refine our strategic play and broaden the player pool through this momentous three-game window,” Hayes expressed. "Our squad is a blend of varied experiences, geared towards honing skills essential for international football. We strive not just to clinch victories, but to embark on a robust pathway forward.”
Veteran midfielder Rose Lavelle graces the lineup, returning after a six-month hiatus post-ankle surgery. Having recently showcased her prowess with Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League, Lavelle’s comeback is eagerly anticipated.
