Ex-NBA Star Shawn Kemp Pleads Guilty to Assault Charge in Washington Parking Lot Shooting

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp stepped into the spotlight once more, but this time not for his high-flying dunks. On Tuesday, Kemp, 55, pled guilty to second-degree assault in a Washington state court. The accusation stemmed from a March 2023 incident in a Tacoma mall parking lot, where Kemp allegedly fired shots at two men inside a Toyota 4Runner.

Despite the alarming event, no injuries were reported; however, the shooting left both the 4Runner and another vehicle damaged. Initially, Kemp faced a charge of first-degree assault with additional firearm enhancement. However, a plea deal was struck, enabling Kemp to avoid potentially severe prison time.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Howe has proposed a sentence of nine months' jail time, followed by a year of supervision and support under the Department of Corrections upon Kemp's release. Kemp may also face restitution payments.

Kemp, known for his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics from 1989 to 1997, has not publicly commented on the proceedings. According to defense documents, the incident unfolded after Kemp’s truck was broken into outside a concert venue. The thieves took off with several valuables, including keys and sports memorabilia. Leveraging a phone-tracking app, Kemp located his missing items near a casino and later at Tacoma Mall, where the confrontation occurred.

During the confrontation, an occupant of the 4Runner reportedly fired at Kemp first. Kemp then allegedly shot back in an attempt to stop the vehicle. After the 4Runner escaped, it was found abandoned days later with an empty holster inside but no weapon.

Prosecutors decided on the plea agreement due to the credibility issues with witnesses and the circumstances surrounding Kemp’s property.

As a result of the plea, Kemp is barred from possessing firearms and must submit a DNA sample for law enforcement. Despite the legal troubles, the former all-star remains focused on his future.
