Galaxy Extend Greg Vanney's Contract Amid Unprecedented Winless Streak
In a move that defies conventional logic, the LA Galaxy have decided to extend the contract of head coach Greg Vanney, amidst a historic skid that sees them winless after 13 games into the new season. Despite the rough start, Vanney's leadership appears undeterred.
It's a striking decision to hand a multi-year deal to Vanney, especially when you consider the 10 losses and three draws this season - the worst start recorded by any team in Major League Soccer history. But the club's general manager, Will Kuntz, insists that the decision was part of a long-term plan formed last year, following their triumph in the 2024 MLS Cup.
"Greg is one of the most respected and successful coaches in MLS history, and we are excited to be continuing under his leadership," Kuntz remarked. "While our current results don’t reflect our standards, our choice remains rooted in faith in Greg’s vision for the team."
Vanney's track record speaks for itself. Under his guidance, the Galaxy clinched their record sixth league title last season, defying odds after a decade of floundering since their 2014 cup win. The previous year, LA finished as runners-up in the Western Conference before blitzing through the playoffs to outplay the New York Red Bulls 2-1 in a thrilling MLS Cup Final.
The club's struggles this season are compounded by the absence of their star midfielder, Riqui Puig, who succumbed to a knee injury. Losing key players like Forward Dejan Joveljic, midfielder Mark Delgado, and Gastón Brugman due to salary cap issues hasn't helped either.
While designated players such as Joseph Paintsil, Gabriel Pec, and Marco Reus have returned, their persistent injuries cripple any lasting momentum this season. And yet, the club shows faith in their coach who once took Toronto to new heights, winning an MLS Cup and reaching the finals multiple times.
The Galaxy aim to stem the tide soon. Despite a 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City attributed to an own-goal, and enduring a record-equalling 7-0 defeat from the Red Bulls, Vanney remains optimistic. This Sunday, they face off against LAFC in the El Tráfico rivalry, hoping for redemption.
