Napoli crowned a magnificent Serie A season with a 2-0 triumph over Cagliari on Friday, courtesy of a Premier League-flavored performance that sealed their second scudetto in three years. Former Manchester United luminary Scott McTominay delivered a goal of extraordinary caliber to open Napoli’s account, quickly followed by a strike from Romelu Lukaku, another familiar Premier League face.
Joining them on the field were Chelsea alumnus Billy Gilmour and former Fulham standout Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, as last season’s champions finished their domestic campaign with an impressive 82-point tally. Philip Billing, previously of Bournemouth, also made a late appearance to solidify the win.
Napoli’s victory put them a hair’s breadth above Inter Milan, last year’s title-holders, who also claimed a win on the night. With their domestic agenda complete, Inter now has its sights set on the UEFA Champions League Final showdown against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich.
The Serie A apparatus wound down its regular season with first and second place locked in competition on Friday. The remaining round of matches will unfold with two games on Saturday and six more on Sunday at 2:45 PM ET.
Antonio Conte, the architect behind Napoli's victory, now boasts an enviable record, having led three different teams to Serie A glory. With past triumphs at Juventus and Inter, in addition to steering Bari to a Serie B title and guiding Chelsea to Premier League honors, Conte stands alone as the sole manager to have shepherded three clubs to the scudetto. His five Serie A championships rival those of icons Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi, in a list topped only by Max Allegri and Giovanni Trapattoni.
Scott McTominay's extraordinary intervention was more than just a goal – it was the clincher that heralded a new chapter in Napoli's storied history.
