Matthew Stafford: "I Never Really Wanted to Leave" the Rams

February murmured with rumors about Matthew Stafford's future. The quarterback, seemingly eyeing a departure from the Rams, was generating chatter across the league. Yet, for Stafford, it was a strategic move - a way to test the waters and ignite the Rams into securing his place for 2025.

When the offseason program kicked off, Stafford faced reporters, ready to set the record straight. “It wasn’t a single Friday meeting revelation,” Stafford explained. “This isn't about one factor. There’s so much I love about this organization and our team. I never truly wanted to leave. I’m just happy to be back and that the Rams are on the same page.”

Rumors of an unsigned revised contract lingered, but Stafford's words were confident. “Getting that sorted is a relief,” he noted. “I’m excited to return and dive into another great season here.”

Stafford fielded queries about his trade talks with other teams. While it seemed peculiar given his own involvement in such discussions, Stafford remained pragmatic. “I think it’s due diligence to look around and understand the league's landscape,” he said. “Being back with the Rams was always my top choice, and thankfully, it worked out.”

The Raiders and Giants, two interested parties, had interpreted Stafford’s explorations as signals he was truly in play. However, Stafford reaffirms his allegiance to the Rams on a flexible, year-to-year basis. “I’m content with our arrangement,” he commented. “There’s a mutual understanding about our future. It’s been well coordinated.”

While several quarterbacks might seek longer security than annual contracts, Stafford's comfort with his situation offers him agility in his career. Even if at times it appears his flexibility remains mostly theoretical.
