Alex Morgan is not stepping off the field without a plan. The soccer icon announced she has joined the investor group for the San Diego Wave, re-cementing her legacy with the National Women’s Soccer League team she once graced as a star player.
The two-time Women's World Cup champion is now a minority stakeholder in the club, a move announced by the Wave on Tuesday. For Morgan, this is more than an investment; it's a homecoming.
“San Diego is where I’ve built my home, where I am raising my children, and found a purpose beyond my playing career,” Morgan expressed. “I believed in Wave FC before a single match was played, and I still believe this Club has the power to change the future of women’s sports.”
Retiring last September after a 15-year illustrious career, Morgan took a brief hiatus while pregnant with her son Enzo, born just last month. Her farewell match painted an emotional picture with 26,516 fans at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium.
Morgan's connection to the Wave began in 2021 when she was among the initial players signed by the then-new club. She left an indelible mark in 63 matches, netting 28 goals, including their historic first.
Her storied career includes 150 NWSL matches, with previous roles at the Portland Thorns and Orlando Pride. International accolades are no less impressive: Morgan secured World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019, along with an Olympic gold in 2012. With 224 appearances and 123 goals for the U.S., she stands fifth on the all-time scoring list.
Beyond goals and glory, Morgan has been a fierce advocate for progress. Her leadership in the fight for equal pay led to a groundbreaking agreement in 2022, ensuring parity with their male counterparts.
Indeed, Morgan is about paving paths. Her push for anti-harassment reforms in the NWSL came at a critical time when the league faced a coach misconduct scandal in 2021.
“Alex has always fought to positively impact this game beyond the pitch,” noted Lauren Leichtman, controlling owner of the Wave. “Her decision to invest reflects her unwavering belief in what we are building here in San Diego.”
In their personal lives, Morgan and husband Servando Carrasco cherish their family moments with son Enzo and daughter Charlie, born in 2020.
