Sporting KC Makes MLS History with Win Minus a Shot on Goal
In an unprecedented MLS match, Sporting Kansas City etched its name into the history books with a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy, without recording a single shot on target. The only score of the night came courtesy of an own goal by Galaxy's Maya Yoshida.
Daniel Salloi’s cross in the 13th minute ricocheted off Yoshida and into the net. The bizzare goal was enough to ensure Kansas City’s victory, marking only their third win in an otherwise challenging season. Sporting has managed to turn the tide recently, celebrating their second victory in three matches.
The defending champion Galaxy, however, have stumbled out of the gates with an unprecedented 0-8-3 start, still hunting for a first win this season, despite historically positive outcomes in previous encounters with Sporting KC.
On the defensive front, John Pulskamp stood firm for Sporting, needing to make just a single save throughout the game. This came right before halftime as he stopped a John Nelson attempt, securing his second clean sheet of the season.
Meanwhile, Dejan Joveljic, a former Galaxy player who was involved in a significant player-for-cash trade, continues to shine for Kansas City, leading them with five goals this season, all scored at home.
In a bout of nostalgic rivalry, interim coach Kerry Zavagnin of Sporting KC and Galaxy's Greg Vanney faced each other again, having been teammates on the U.S. national team. Their historical coaching duel harks back to the 2000 MLS Cup, won by the then-Kansas City Wizards.
As both teams brace for upcoming challenges, LA Galaxy looks to break their winless streak against the New York Red Bulls, while Sporting KC sets their sights on the Portland Timbers.
