Don Nelson's Footwear Protest Against Luka Doncic Trade
OKLAHOMA CITY — If shoes could talk, Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson's would scream. Decked out in Luka Doncic's signature sneakers, Nelson made a silent, yet bold, statement on what he thinks about the Dallas Mavericks' decision to trade their young superstar.
While accepting the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, Nelson's choice of footwear wasn't just for comfort. It was a protest. “I want everybody to know I'm wearing Luka's shoes,” Nelson stated. “It’s a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him.”
Doncic, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers as a result of this season's awe-inspiring swap for Anthony Davis, remains a sore spot for Dallas fans. The initial uproar appears to have muted slightly with the Mavericks' recent lottery win, which offers them a promising future.
For Nelson, trading a player of Doncic’s caliber contradicts a principle instilled in him by legendary coach Red Auerbach: Don’t lose your generational talents. “When you have a great player — Bill Russell, John Havlicek, Sam Jones — you keep him for a lifetime,” Nelson remarked. “You honor that player.”
Deeply connected to Dallas, having coached the Mavericks for eight seasons, and with familial ties through his son, Donnie Nelson, as an executive there for over a decade, Nelson’s footwear protest resonated with many who question the franchise's future without their erstwhile star.
