Dodgers Star Shohei Ohtani Edges Closer to Pitching Return
Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way sensation, is making steady strides in his recovery from elbow surgery. The 30-year-old slugger and pitcher resumed his throwing program, playing catch at Wrigley Field before the Dodgers opened a two-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
After the pivotal life moment of welcoming his first child with his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, Ohtani returned to his baseball duties in Southern California. Despite his recent off-field engagements, he still managed to contribute during the Dodgers’ 1-0 victory over Texas, though without any hits in three at-bats, earning a walk.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared insights into Ohtani’s progression, noting an upcoming bullpen session. "We're taking it day by day," Roberts stated. "Shohei's focused. He’ll start with a light bullpen session on Wednesday and, if all goes well, he'll have a comprehensive one on Saturday." Yet, Roberts emphasized there's no rush, "Once he's comfortable facing hitters, we’ll gauge his readiness." The ace hasn't yet thrown his distinctive slider during this recovery phase.
Ohtani last pitched on August 23, 2023, during his stint with the Los Angeles Angels before undergoing surgery on September 19. Not one to sit idle, he pivoted to focusing on his batting as the 2024 season approached, hitting a notable .277 with six homers and eight RBIs so far, following his lucrative $700 million, 10-year deal with the Dodgers.
While Ohtani progresses, another Dodgers pitcher, Blake Snell, also rejoined the ranks, playing catch as he recuperates from shoulder inflammation. Positive reports followed, as Roberts noted Snell's steady improvement.
Meanwhile, pitcher Tyler Glasnow is on track to return Sunday against Pittsburgh after shaking off calf cramps that cut short his last outing against the Rangers.
As the Dodgers wrap up their series in Chicago, all eyes remain on Ohtani’s journey back to the mound, a transition carefully watched and eagerly anticipated by fans.
