In a spirited encounter at the nation’s capital, Breanna Stewart once again showcased why she's a force to be reckoned with. The New York Liberty stormed past the Washington Mystics with an 86-78 win, marking their best start in franchise history at a perfect 8-0.
Stewart led the charge with a commanding double-double, pouring in 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Her performance was complemented by Sabrina Ionescu, who added 13 points and orchestrated the offense with seven assists.
The game tilted in Liberty’s favor when Kennedy Burke’s timely 3-pointer just before the end of the third quarter extended their advantage to 73-57. However, the Mystics refused to fold, rallying to cut the deficit to just six points early in the final quarter.
Just when it seemed the momentum might swing Washington’s way, Liberty's Isabelle Harrison came up clutch with a key defensive play. Her steal and subsequent fast-break layup, completed with a three-point play, pushed the lead back to double digits at 81-71.
The Mystics managed to slice New York’s lead down to four points after a quick burst, but Stewart's steady hand at the free-throw line closed the door on any comeback. Sinking three of four free throws, with Ionescu icing two more, the Liberty maintained their composure and closed out the game.
With their eighth consecutive win, the Liberty not only best their 1997 predecessors but also assert their status as early season juggernauts, ready to take on anyone in their path.
