Bengals Select Texas A&M Edge Shemar Stewart 17th Overall

After two seasons of disappointment, the Cincinnati Bengals zeroed in on their defensive frailties with a strategic pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Their recent struggles have been a sore spot, with a defense that ranked 21st in points allowed and an abysmal 31st in total yards in 2023, followed by 25th in both categories in the subsequent year. Even with the stellar efforts of edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, the shortcomings were glaring, and Hendrickson's contract situation remained a potential powder keg, as the NFL's sack leader mulled a contract extension or seeking a trade.

With the 17th overall pick, the Bengals aimed to bolster their defensive line by drafting Shemar Stewart from Texas A&M. Stewart's climb to prominence at the Senior Bowl practices sealed his status as a first-rounder, exhibiting the prowess the Bengals hope to harness alongside or in place of Hendrickson.

Stewart's rise wasn't without its hurdles; he only emerged as a full-time starter this past year. Despite modest stats of 1.5 sacks, seven quarterback hurries, and 5.5 tackles for losses in 2024, his three-year college stint boasted 65 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. These numbers reveal a player with untapped potential and promise.

However, the Bengals can't rest just yet; gaps at safety, linebacker, and especially the offensive guard position remain significant concerns. For now, Shemar Stewart's addition represents a pivotal step towards rebuilding a more formidable Bengals defense.
